Ms. Ouellette has lectured extensively at both the national and international level. She has presented at over 874 meetings in 40 states and has 96 publications to her credit including 12 chapters and 2 books. She received the Achievement Award from the North Carolina Association of Nurse Anesthetists in 1994. In 1995 she became a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. In 1996 she received the Dannemiller Award for Excellence in Anesthesiology. She received the AANA program Director of the year award in 1997 and the AANA 24th Agatha Hodgins Award for outstanding accomplishments in 1998. She received the IFNA Hermi Lohnert Award in June 2010 for outstanding contributions to the international nurse anesthesia community and in 2012 she received the AANA Helen Lamb Award for outstanding contributions in nurse anesthesia education. In 2018 she received the AANA Didactic Instructor of the Year Award. She continues to teach at the nurse anesthesia programs at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and a Wake Forest sponsored reentry program for nurse anesthetists who have been out of practice.


Anesthesia is thought to be best practiced via an interdisciplinary approach that includes anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists, nurses and other operating room staff, recovery room nurses, and anesthesia technicians to ensure patient safety. Because there is no agent capable of instantly reversing the effects of inhaled anesthetics, close monitoring of the patient is necessary during anesthesia. A responsible anesthesiologist, anesthetist, or nurse should attentively monitor vital signs during induction and maintenance periods to confirm that the patient is appropriately sedated without signs of instability.[13] Standard guidelines and regulations for monitoring patients during anesthesia are required in every hospital operating room, outpatient surgical or procedure center, and office-based setting. A 50-yr-old female, American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status 1, is scheduled for laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Her history is noncontributory. She takes no medication and has no allergies. The patient is otherwise healthy and has no complaints. She has removed her glasses and states that she does not use any contact lenses. You are joined by a medical student who put all the monitors on the patient, including the oxygen saturation monitor on her right index finger. The patient is induced, and the medical student ventilates the patient by mask. He places an endotracheal tube in the trachea successfully. The anesthetic proceeds uneventfully and she wakes up pain free and is taken to the recovery room in a stable condition. About 1 h later, the patient is still in the recovery room. You are called by the recovery room nurse to tell you that the patient is complaining of a painful eye. What will you do and what could the cause be?
